Andrew’s Birthday Blog – February 2017

 In Andrew's Blog

I’m presenting you with this image of my most recent painting. It may, or may not be finished. Just to give you a couple of details, it’s 6 feet wide and is, as are most of my canvases, oil on linen. I’ve been working on it for over six months and it’s gone through many changes and will probably go through many more. This is at least the 17th iteration. I can’t say where it’ll finish up.

What I would be very interested in knowing, if you care to give me a few minutes of your time, is, “How does it make you feel”? I’m not asking for a criticism of the painting, nor am I asking for your assumption of what it is I’m trying to do. I don’t even want you to tell me whether you like it or hate it. Just, “How does it make you feel”? It may be that it doesn’t make you feel anything. That’s OK.

Please respond through the website www.andrewaaronsart.com and not by email.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Happy Birthday, Andrew, with many more awaiting. Love to you and Paula. Painting wants something lower right corner.

      Hi Blair,
Are you sure that the painting wants something lower right, or is it you that wants it?
      Best, Andrew

It’s making me feel slightly creepy !! Not sure why, but much would become clearer were I to be seeing it in the flesh!
Perhaps, bizarrely, it is the blank canvas to the right – it’s an unfinished chapter or symphony.

    Happy birthday, Andrew

The blank bit is for you to fill in if you want to.

It reminds me of a man – probably the devil- walking to the right. The is a lot going on in his mind/ brain. The piano is of interest and the red may signify romance or hope. The dark man – devil- actually may not be all bad and the whit figure gives hope for the good.

A very interesting piece of art. Would a flower in the bottom right be a bad thing?

How does it make me feel? Ooh. A properly difficult but pertinent question. The best I can do under your very reasonable rules is:

    It makes me feel interested.

Dear Andrew-When I first saw this painting it made me feel “happy”– then I looked at it again and it made me feel confused as I tried to figure it out. But now I’m not even trying to figure it out and just enjoying it for what it is. It reminds me of your “sense of humour!”

Happy Birthday Andrew! Glad you are still producing such interesting work. Your painting made me feel both hopeful and a bit sad! Hope you and the family are all well.

    All best wishes,

    Dear Andrew

The painting looks a bit sinister to me, and makes me feel anxious. It must be pretty dramatic at 6′ diameter!

I don’t know the exact date of your birthday, but hope you had a happy one. You must be close to Charles Darwin (12 February) which in my book has to be a good thing.

Do we need to believe in evolution to make art. I was thinking of joining or creating a flat earth society.

Hello Andrew, it was a long time before my eyes left their eyes and I even noticed the keyboard. The eyes make me think of the contrast between our inner, weaker selves, and our outer selves that are strengthened by what is reflected in and on us.

Thought I’d look again today, to see how I feel about it today? It makes me think I am trying to see the best in things, but that is thinking not feeling. So…. thoughts are not feelings as thoughts are transient, they come & go & are not necessarily true & can trick you. Do I need therapy 🙂
It’s making me feel inquisitive, a bit voyeuristic, looking into someone else’s world. It’s interesting whats happening outside the yellow edge, which is like a frame?
Yes I know it doesn’t make much sense to me either, but does it have to?
    Love, Love, Love…..

It doesn’t need to make sense. Can you use words to describe music? Other than saying that was a beautiful B flat.

Andrew – first impression was something threatening, violent, in the blackness and apparent raised fist of the figure, but then I saw the exuberant performance that involves and excites the audience. The sense of danger on the margin, however, doesn’t go away. I remember an experience just like that many years ago in a jazz club in New York.

All the best to you both and Happy Birthday! (I’m even closer than you to Darwin, on the 11th)
